For immediate release

Fintan O'Toole, Irish Times journalist, theatre critic and author will be the guest of honour at a meeting of the Literary and Debating Society on Thursday 23rd October in the Upper Aula Maxima at 7pm.

Mr. O'Toole will speak on a subject particularly close to his heart, "History and journalism and the dangers of a historically illiterate media." O'Toole, who is one of Ireland's foremost liberal voices, has criticised American imperialism, Irish public service failure and Fianna Fail corruption.

About the visit by O'Toole, Jackie Driscoll, Vice-Auditor of Lit & Deb commented that "for anyone who has an interest in history and its implications in modern times, this is an must-see event"

Lisa Scott, PRO said "This event is an exploration in assessing the media critically, rather than receiving information passively- which is a cornerstone to Lit & Deb's debates"

Fintan O'Toole will receive the Literary and Debating Society's President's Medal and will be joining Roddy, Doyle, Patrick McCabe and Noam Chomsky among the illustrious recipients of the award.

There will be a chance to ask Fintan O'Toole questions at the end. A reception will follow in Paddy's Bar, Prospect Hill.

Also note:

Fintan O'Toole has written several books about playwright, Tom Murphy, whose work will be celebrated by Lit & Deb and DramSoc in a dedicated festival 10th-14th November.

Other people due to receive the President's medal this year include Bertie Ahern and Jonathan Powell, former Chief of Staff to Tony Blair.
