The NUI Galway Literary & Debating Society will be hosting an Audience with Garry Hynes, founder and artistic director of the Druid Theatre Company, at 7pm on Thursday March 11th in the Aula Maxima, in the Main Quadrangle of NUI Galway. Born in Ballaghadereen in 1953, Garry Hynes is a graduate of NUI Galway who has gone on to become one of the most accomplished and well respected individuals in Irish theatre. From her beginnings as a member of the NUIG Drama Society, Dr. Hynes went on to found the Druid Theatre and currently serves as its artistic director. Over the last 30 years, Dr. Hynes has directed plays for the Abbey Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Exchange, Manchester, the Kennedy Center and the Royal Court Theatre, London. She was also the first female director to receive a Tony Award for Direction for The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 1998 and was awarded the Freedom of the City of Galway in 2006. Dr. Hynes will be interviewed by Professor Adrian Frazier – an English Lecturer in NUIG and Director of the MA in Drama and Theatre Studies, and will cover topics such as theatre in Galway and in Ireland, as well as discussing the role and influence of Irish theatre on the global stage. After the interview, there will be a questions and answer session, where members of the audience will have the opportunity to put questions to Dr. Hynes and Professor Frazier.
