Minutes 25th Feb Literary and Debating society It was a night full of reminicing and rememberance. We carted all the old hacks from their retirement homes and brought them, for one glorious night, back to the kirwan. Yes, it was Hacks and Heroes, a look back into the past while looking forward to the rest of the night Jackie opened up the floor to PMT motions TTHW send a letter to the auditor of the literary and debating society condemning the presentation of the presidents medal to George Lee Kevin Leevt (HLM) He hasn’t actually done anything in government. Just a narsistic individual out for his own ego rather that the country and cost us without achieving anything
Peter O’Brien (HLM) George Lee had principles and he wanted to do things. It was a chance to change the approach to politics in Ireland and failed but that was the system failing, not him.
A number of changes to the motions were proposed but none were binding to the resolution Paddy Clusky (HLM) after large amounts of co-erssing, admitted to working for Mr. Bruton, shoddow minister or “dark lord” He only spent 8 months in politics and was placed as chair of the group he wanted. He had the chance and did nothing with it. Its his own fault....
John Morriarty (HLM) There was a change of expenses systems in the dail, clocking in systems etc. He got out when it stopped being economicly sound for him as he should. He also told us of his belief that George Lee was a master of espionage who was working for Fianna Fail all along
Enda Dolan (HLM) George Lee is like glee in more than just name, all shiny but underneath all the razzle dazzle, just a sham celebrity candidate. He was never going to last so let him go back to TV
Niamh McNally (Arts) We awarded him the medal for a career of economic prediction and quality journalism. He may not have been the best politician but his philosophies and contribution still stand
Martin Collins (HLM) He had the ability, just didn’t have the resolution. People listnened, he had the chance to change things and didn’t provide. Its all on his shoulders.
Dave Finn (HLM) The issue if that all the people who’ve gotten the medal have been pretty crap with few exceptions.
At this point we had an addendum added to the motion TTHW give someone called Bob Christmas the Presidents medal too, this was passed We are currently in the process of finding and contacting Bob Christmas about this matter
Summated and defeated
TTHW condemn tesco for banning pajamas in their stores Peter O’Brien (HLM) There is very little difference between normal clothes and nightware. All this is is classist snobs looking down on the common people and that ain’t cool
Steve Nolan (HLM) They are mearly taking the stance that we’re not able to do, stamp out the lowest and most debased section of our society
John Morriarty (HLM) Just think of the banannas, the deliscious deliscious bananas!
Enda Dolan (HLM) This is the only way that they can eat, if we can stop them, then they wont be around anymore to sully our great country Summated and Defeated
Then it came time for main business The motion was that TTHB we’ve never had it better, a motion as vague as some of the speakers memories Mr Micheal D. Higgins took the chair for this section
Peter O Brien Consumer choice is at an all time hight, just look at all the options that are out there for shampoo! iPhones are incredible and sex is better these days too. Life kicks ass!
Martin Collins What exactly was wrong with life before now. Now we have no money, less of a sense of society and people dont know what they’re missing out on
Muireann O Dwyer Alcohol and the lit and deb combine into awsomeness! Fluffiness is nice and we have more of that now. Sex is awsome and now that we have the internet for porn, everyones getting better at it and students are finally becoming empassioned again
Eoin O’Mhaolin Society is awful these days, with facebook and the internet no-one deals face to face. He met his wife outside the kirwan after lit and deb many years ago and she turned him down, but because it was all face to face, he finally convinced her to go out with him
Steve Nolan We now have a more diverse and multicultural society, this feeds into culture being better. Its helped us spur towards gay rights and rights for women.
Damien Crawford Theres a Culture od hedonism and it destroys success. We are all in debt now, we have increased violence and crime in society and the university now kicks people out at 10. Back in his day you could go til all hours!
Sean Butler Climate change means we’re getting better weather, atheism means were more independant of the catholic church. We have social networks which are awsome. Make more friends and keep in touch easier than ever before.
Debate was then opened to the floor Mike Spring (Education) We now have global discourse, less homophobia, sexism and racism. Im looking forward to the future because the future belongs to us.
Nameless contributor #1 All weve done is brush sexism and homophobuia under the carpet. We’re ruder than before and the prejudices still exist
Niamh McNally (ARTS) Losing something about yourself is not always the worst thing, we now have female empowerment Dance is now a representation of society, look at dirty dancing...
Beartla De Burca (Graduate) Were pretty good these days, history was pretty awful. Lots of people died and death is bad
Vincent Lacy (HLM) TV was better back then. Just look at the Den back in the day with Ted adn zig and zag, Biddy on glenroe. Back in the day Galway even had a porn cinema. The judges returned and deemed Eoin O’Mhaeolin to be the hackiest of the hacks
The motion was put to the house and was
All that was left to do was to thank everyone for their contributions and invite everyone back to the dail for a well deserved drink
