The 7 th meeting of the society was held on the 3 rd November 2005. There were no sterling speeches and most in attendance were hilariously not funny. The majority were pitifully unattractive, dull and boring. The minutes were read and passed.

The first PMT was proposed by Vincent Lacey and seconded by Patrick Cluskey. In the interest of giving Robert some corresponding to do, it was proposed that “TTHW write a letter to Mr. James Hope and Dr. Elizabeth Park, congratulating them on the occasion of their engagement.” The motion was passed without objection. I wish also to congratulate the happy couple and may they have many decades of happiness together.

The second PMT was proposed by Mr. Dan Colley (1 st arts) and was “TTHW not impeach Justice Curtin.” The confiscated evidence (child porn) collected by the gardai had been seized one day after the expiry date of the warrant that had been used. This technicality, according to Dan was enough to allow Judge Curtin to remain a judge. Beartla DeBurca (2 arts) challenged Vincent by declaring his intentions to kill everyone… Beartla stated that the Judge was a paedophile and should not get away with breaking the law because of a technicality. During his speech he further incited Vincent to throw him out by hitting Dan. Consequently Dan cried and was forced to relive the traumatic sequence in his mind once every 12 minutes for the rest of his life. Thanks to Beartla he only lived for another 26 minutes, meaning he only relived it twice. Laura Gistout (drank too much at UCD) asked where does the limitation of freedom start? Martin Collins (law) said that a judge can be removed from office due to misconduct. Eoin O’Fiachain (engineering) said politicians must be kept out of the judiciary. Robert Gormley (arts) expressed doubt in Justice Curtins ability and asked, if a judge is a racist should he be allowed to remain a judge? Donny Quinn (Future Arts) stated the law is a set of rules separate from morality and sexuality. Anto Doherty (2arts) talked of a case we had just done in law that morning and also stated that we can’t change the law retrospectively. The motion was summed up and defeated.

The third PMT was proposed by myself and was “TTHB Kazaa and Bittorrent are the worst things that could have happened to music.” I said that when people steal music from the internet they are stealing money, not just from the artists but the hundreds of thousands of people in the record industry. John Moriartity(2 psychology) opposed, saying that Kazaa and Bittorrent have caused more people to start listening to songs. At this juncture, Martin Collins, determined to talk about Israel for some reason, lodged a procedural motion that the motion should be immediately be put to the floor. The procedural motion was passed, the motion put to the floor and defeated.

Main business opened and yet again Sean Butler and Vincent Lacey were our showpiece speakers, meaning either they’re incredibly good debaters, or that they had nothing better to do.

Sean proposed “TTHW wipe Israel off the map.” He said Jerusalem did not belong to the Jews as it had belonged to a hundred different sets of people at 100 different points in history. He said the solution was the creation of one secular democratic state. Vincent Lacey (2arts), speaking in main business for the 3 rd time in a row in the exact same position, said who would rule this “one secular state” that Sean had proposed.

The motion was opened to the floor. For a while it looked like nobody would speak however eventually Robert Gormley (arts) stood up mentioned some factual errors in the prop. Martin Collins said that this was not the sole problem in the Middle East. Dave Keane (3 b. corp law) said that the new president of Iran was a mad man who didn’t understand foreign policy. Beartla DeBurca talked about the definition of the word “simple”, in frankly what was the best speech all night. Jeffrey Rockeet (2 arts) said that a state has both the right to exist and the right to protect itself. The motion was summed up and defeated.

You’re probably expecting some sort of funny closing to the minutes. There will be none…
