While the Society is involved in events and competitions throughout the year, most of its events happen during the academic calendar. During term time public speaking workshops are held every Tuesday, a group of members hold informal coffee shop meetings every Wednesday and main events are hosted every Thursday. Details of each event can be found in our calendar.

All students and staff of the university are members of the Society upon their registration. However, members of the public are very welcome to attend events. The Society is eager to engage more with the city of Galway and anything that we can do to facilitate public involvement is of interest to us.

Main Business

The evening’s Main Business takes place in one of the following formats:

Debate

This involves guest speakers who are invited to speak on a preplanned motion. Four guest speakers will each deliver 10 minute speeches for and against the motion. Time is then given for 5 minute speeches on the motion from members of the audience, as in PMT. After some time the guest speakers have the opportunity to sum up their arguments with 3 minute speeches and the motion is voted on by the House.

Panel Discussion

This involves guest speakers who have been invited to speak on a preplanned topic. Guest speakers will deliver 10 minute speeches discussing a topic. Time is then given for 5 minute speeches from the audience before summations. This is not a for and against format but a discussion of an issue with specialists in the relevant fields.

Formal Address

A guest speaker will deliver an address on a topic of their choosing. This will be followed by questions and answers and some time for engagement with the speaker.

Workshops

NUIG’s Kirwan Theatre

7-10pm

These will cover public speaking skills, the art of debating and introductory seminars in subjects which are current hot topics (International Relations, Politics, Philosophy, etc.)

Hangout

Meeting Room 1

3-6pm

A chance to get to know the society away from formal structures, get to know its members and chat about the day’s big story.

NUIG’s Kirwan Theatre

7-10pm

The meeting is opened with the entrance of the arrival of the Society’s Auditor and Recording Secretary. (Society tradition: audience stands for Auditor’s arrival and shout “RESIGN”) The Auditor will introduce the structure and topic of main business before the Recording Secretary reads the minutes of the previous meeting.

There will then be one hour for Private Members’ Time. Any member may propose a motion to be discussed by the house. Anyone is free to speak once their request to speak is accepted by the Auditor. PMT acts as a forum for open debate on topics that matter to people at that moment. After each topic is debated, a vote is taken and the support of the House recorded. Main Business, in one of the three formats above and advertised as the event of the night, then takes place.

Once Main Business is finished the meeting will be formally closed by the Auditor. The event is followed by a social, the details of which will be announced by the Auditor at the close of the meeting. The social gives members and guests the opportunity to discuss the issues in a more informal setting
