World Record Debates
The Lit & Deb has broken the World
Record for the Longest Continuous Debate on three occasions over the past 20
years. The first of these marathon debates ran from 21st-27th
February 1985; a
total of 308 speakers spoke in 17 different languages on the motion “that Ireland is green.” The debate went on for a world
record of 153 hours and 20 minutes. Pictured below is Mícheál
Ó Sé (Auditor 1984-1985) bringing the debate to an end. The Lit & Deb regained the record in 1988 (240
hours or 10 days) and in 1995 (672 hours or 28 days).
