The History Society

The History Society exists to debate historical topics in an informal social setting, and help students to acquire a historical worldview, allowing them to explore the possible relevance and impact of past events on our modern world. The History Society, being departmental in nature, works closely with the department and receives a great deal of support and co-operation from the staff, for which the Society is very grateful.

In the background, for what seemed like a quiet lull in activity in Semester 1, the committee worked tirelessly to create a packed schedule for Semester 2. Six public lectures took place ranging from Dr David Edwards on the "Irish in London, 1400-1600", to Professor Ronan Fanning who spoke on "Edward Heath and Bloody Sunday".

A small group of students represented Galway at the Irish Historical Students' Associations National Conference in Cork. The conference provides students, both under-graduate and post-graduate, with the opportunity to present a paper on a historical topic in a formal setting. Both Annaleigh Margey and Robert Posrtsmouth presented papers. At the AGM after the weekend, NUI, Galway was nominated to host the conference next year, a prestigious event that has not been held in Galway since 1993.

As expected, the Arts Ball was yet again a huge success. Held annually by the History Society, the event assures our position as one of the most important societies in the College. Now firmly in the hands of our Arts Ball officer elect, Eilis Fallon, we hope that next year the Arts Ball will again prove itself as the most important social event on campus.

The year ended with a larger committee elect, showing the success of the year. The committee elect are as follows:- Auditor: Susan Murphy; Vice-Auditor: David Russell; Treasurer: Maria MacMullan; I.H.S.A. Officer: Keith Maye; Arts Ball Officer: Eilis Fallon; P.R.O: Davet Hyland/Ciara Sims, Correspondence Secretary: Robert Rooney; Recording Secretary: Eimear O'Shea; and 2nd Year Representative: Jennifer Doran. With the advent of another college year, with new possibilities and new events, we hope that in the future we can create a greater understanding of and interest in the past.
