A Message from the Society’s Patron

Ta áthas orm tréaslú leis an gCumann Liteartha agus Diospóireachta as an obair atá déanta acu i gcaitheamh na bliana, ag cur aidhmeanna an Chumainn chun cinn. Ta cion ag an Ollscoil, idir foireann teagaisc agus mic léinn ar an gCumann ársa sco.

The Lit & Deb continues to appeal to a broad spectrum of students who are interested in debating the topical and sometimes controversial issues of the day. The society holds a special place in the hearts, not just of present students, but of the many thousands of Galway graduates, who, down through the years have enjoyed the debates, sometimes hilarious, sometimes serious, but always interesting and thought- provoking. At a time when the pressures of study and examinations often weigh heavily on students, societies like the Lit & Deb provide a welcome forum for students to debate a wide range of subjects in a lighthearted manner.

The Lit & Deb has a proud and distinguished history. The society celebrated 150 years in 1997. Many changes have taken place in that time, both in Irish education and in society generally. New societies have emerged in NUI, Galway all competing for student support. In order for the Lit & Deb to go forth and succeed for another hundred years, it is important to take stock of its present situation and plan for the next millennium. Given the energy and commitment of its officers, I’m confident that this challenge will be undertaken enthusiastically.

Many graduates of Galway, who have gone on to successful careers in the public service, politics and the arts, honed their considerable debating skills at the Lit & Deb. Despite the tremendous technological advances made since the society was established, its ‘raison d’etre’ has not changed or become any less relevant to student life. In fact, the age of the computer has not diminished the importance of the individual being able to stand in front of an audience and argue his/her side of a debate with clarity, courage and conviction.
