Editorial

Dear Reader,

1997/1998 was quite a strange one world-wide. It was the year of Louise Woodward, Peace talks (of the Mitchell and Anan varieties), The Euro, Brian Ashton and then not, and a host of other events and celebrities which I sure will be remembered for years to come. Just as I’m sure the 151st session of the Literary and Debating Society will hold special memories for most. For us here in the Lit ‘n’ Deb it was the year within which many young eloquent members of the house raised their voices for the first time, sometimes in anger, sometimes in jest.

The year was also one where UCG was no more having upped its status to that of the more corporate sounding title of NUI, Galway (Not NUI,G). The RTC also created similar notions for itself believing once and for all that Galway RTC was not all it had previously been cracked up to be. We here in NUI, Galway had realised that some time ago, but enough of that, to the matter in hand.

The College Annual has provided a forum for many of the literary greats within UCG for many years and fortunately this year was no exception. I would like to thank all of those who contributed to this years magazine and would also like to apologise to anyone who failed to make it inside these hallowed covers. Space I’m afraid was one of the few items

which we lacked.

Many of you will notice the fine artistry which brightens up the black and white pages, and which you will of course trace back to the hands of that fine artist and great PRO Ms Helena Devenney.

I will refrain from holding you back any longer from the debating delights and literary heights that fill this long awaited magazine and I hope that after browsing through, you will feel, as I do, that much talent lies within the old walls that constitutes NUI, Galway

Your Editor,
