The Economy Vs Environment Debate
‘That This House Would Rather Have a Job than a Windmill’
Venue: Kirwan Theatre (Arts Concourse NUI Galway)
Date: Thursday 27th January
Time: 7pm
Both the economy and the environment are divisive issues in Ireland. To some people the environment is something to worry about after the economy is stabilised and the prosperity of the country is secured. To others, the belief is that the economy can only truly be stable when the environmental concerns of the country are addressed. These two concepts are inevitably linked, but is it possible to have one without the other? Is it more important to prioritise one over the other? Or do both need to be given equal consideration?
Ireland has seen conflicts in the past which has demonstrated this struggle between the economy and the environment. A prime example of this was the Corrib Gas Pipe. The pipe would bring money, prosperity and jobs in the short term, but would induce long term damage to the environment. Which is more important? Should the environment be viewed as a hindrance to rapid economic growth, or a means by which long term stability prosperity can be achieved?
So, as part of NUI Galway’s ‘Green Week’, join the Literary and Debating Society this Thursday evening for a lively and interesting debate on the motion ‘That This House Would Rather Have a Job Than a Windmill’. All are welcome to attend the debate and give their own thoughts on the subject.
