The origin of the phrase "Gib" is a disputed one. Some claim it stands for "Green Ignorant Bastards", others say it's named after some guy called Gibson and the more literary among us might believe it derives itself from James Joyce's Ulysses and its reference to Trinity "Jibs".
Regardless, in Galway, it only means one thing: the night you, the first year, introduce yourself to the Lit&Deb. You are the star of hte show, or more accurately, 19 to 20 people just like you are the stars.
Gibs is an informal competition for first years, where new speakers take to the podium and speak for five minutes (or as long as they want) about one of the motions we've set or anything you want really. Be funny, be interesting, be controversial, be offensive. Just be... you. And we'll love you for it.
Winning is largely irrelevant, although there will be shiny prizes, and the glory of being head Giblet. We used to have a liberated champagne bucket as a trophy, but we lost it. This year, the theme is James Bond.
Some say it's just an excuse for the older people to wear black tie (yes, there are people who look for an excuse to do so), but for you, it's an excuse to be charming, suave, and sophisticated.
Dress up if you want (or don't). Talk about how the world is not enough (or don't). Everyone remembers their first Gibs night, so make it what you want.
Afterwards hit the Freshers' Fling afterwards to have your vodka martini shaken, not stirred (if, like Bond, you are a weak drinker and want nothing more than cold water with a dash of gin and dry vermouth).
After enjoying losing your college debating virginity you may be left longer for more. Fear not, young Gib, for the Freshers Fling awaits you. Coming straight after Gibs night in the Cellar Bar, this Bond themed party is set to be a high rolling combination of fun and debauchery. Join us over martinis. Argue...I mean...debate... over who's the best Bond of all time. Witness explosions and car chase. The Cellar will have it all (note: artistic licence may have been employed in this passage).
Thinking you should hang up the tux and put the revolver away? well, we can think of something more sociable to do...HOUSEPARTY! Follow us back to a secret location and continue the night in style (preferably a suave one, but we're not fussy). This is one party you cannot afford to miss. Dress to impress. Bring the cigars. Or at least a lethal bowler hat.
