The Irish Language Debate |
|
Date: Thursday 5th March Time: 7pm Location: Kirwan The motion before the House this Thursday night is "That This House Would Leave The Irish Language To Fend For Itself". Despite the language's recent official recognition by the EU, should we still be forcing children to learn it from a young age? Should ones love of ones own culture and heritage be enough to instil a love of the language too? Or should a dying language be let go, no longer deserving of special government funding and a without the prominent place it sees in our education system?
In a controversial debate, the public is welcome as always to air their view on the floor. This debate is to be filmed as part of a Swedish documentary about language and culture. Post debate reception to follow in Paddy's Bar, Prospect Hill, opposite Cuba*.
